On Friday, December 16th, 2011 five students participated in TMCC High School’s Poetry Out Loud competition. Four judges from the community selected Jordan Sliter as the winner and Rachelanne Williams as runner-up. Judges were Nancy Cummings, Angie Flynn, 2010 TMCC High School grad, Candace Goodman, and the esteemed Poet Laureate, Shaun Griffin.

Poetry Out Loud is a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. It requires students to fully understand poems and poets through memorization and performance.

The Esteemed Poet Laureate, Shaun Griffin, judging the competition.

Judges looked for Physical Presence, Voice and Articulation, Dramatic Appropriateness, Level of Difficulty of the Poem and Evidence that the student understands the poem. TMCC High School English teacher’s, Launie Gardner and Kathleen O’Brien, selected finalists from their classes and assisted students with memorization and recitation techniques. Most importantly, teachers had been showing students how to analyze and understand the significance of the poem. Why did they do this? O’Brien responded:

“Poetry’s amazing. It’s an art and I think it’s a lot easier for people to appreciate visual art and they tend to be intimidated by poetry. I just hope that if people could spend a little time with poetry… it enriches part of their life and I think that’s worth something. To engage meaningfully with something beautiful…”

As a result of this competition, Launie Gardner expects “people to get more exposed to poetry and by doing so, they’ll enjoy it more. Poetry Out Loud itself will grow out of what we’re doing in our classroom so that those students who perform the highest in class would want to be part in the competition.”

The winner, Jordan Sliter, will go on to compete in the regional competition, and will hopefully go on to compete in state and national too!

The recitation was coordinated by Jill Berryman, president of the Nevada Alliance for Arts Education, which oversees the POL competition and the Scholastic Writing Awards statewide.

Due to our changing weather pattern, we are going to relay the information on Delayed Start and Snow Closure. You must keep in mind that TMCC High School’s policies on these topics are governed by both the Washoe County School District and TMCC.

A Delayed Start will be used by the Washoe County School District when it appears an extra hour of time will allow road crews to better clear roads and highways. The public will be advised on local radio and TV stations beginning at 6:00 a.m. that schools will begin their class time one hour later. Because we begin our high school classes at a later time than the regular high schools, the Delayed Start issued by Washoe County School District does not apply to TMCC High School. However, TMCC will sometimes issue a delayed start which may affect any of our classes starting before noon.

A Snow Closure will be used by both the Washoe County School District and TMCC in the event that heavy amounts of snow make it dangerous to hold classes and force closure of schools. The public will be advised on local radio and TV stations beginning at 6:00 a.m. that schools will be closed. For a WCSD closure you can also call the Parent Line at 334-8373. A recorded message will give you the latest information. Closings and delays are announced on the district web site at www.washoe.k12.nv.us under “Breaking News.” For a TMCC closure you can call 673-7000 for the recorded message or access their website at www.tmcc.edu.

If the Washoe County School District announces a Snow Closure, there will be no high school classes at TMCC High School. If TMCC announces a Snow Closure, there will be no high school classes at TMCC High School and no college classes at TMCC. For closure or delay of college classes, please listen for specific instructions for the Dandini, Edison, Meadowood, and Redfield campuses. If there is a Snow Closure, class cancellation, or delay for TMCC High School, we will also put a message on our voice mail which you can access by calling our main number at 674-7660.

NOTE: If Washoe County School District classes have been cancelled but TMCC classes (college) have not been cancelled, the parent must make the decision regarding the safety of the student driving to the campus.

The students of TMCC High School gathered together for an all-school assembly, Friday, November 4, 2011. During the meeting
English instructor, Susan Henneberg presented the Student of the Month of October, Marissa Squire.

Susan Henneberg picked Marissa because she is a successful “juggler.” Although it’s challenging to be a juggler, Marissa manages
her priorities efficiently. This full-time student deserves this award because she stays on top of things, such as committing to her education and engaging engaged in class activities.

Marissa is also involved in varsity soccer for North Valleys, while also being a mother of a two-year old daughter named Jocelynne, who’s extremely smart and looks almost exactly like her mother! “My daughter is my biggest motivation, I want to provide a good life for her, so a good career is very much needed.” Marissa wants to become a Family Nurse Practitioner, who’s going to start off going to either TMCC’s or UNR’s Nursing Program to become an RN, then further her education after that. But now, she is currently working at a senior-living community as a caregiver.

In order to be qualified as a student of the month, the teachers of TMCC High school, “look for students who are engaged, who put in extra effort towards school, and who seek personal success – not just for the grade. Sometimes it’s not always the A+ students who are chosen, but those who work hard to pursue their dreams. We try to alternate juniors and seniors, so maybe the next one will be a junior.”
